The Waste Gas Capture Initiative (WGCI) applauds Governor Shapiro’s announcement of major new investments in 31 projects across Pennsylvania as a powerful demonstration of the economic and energy potential that can be unlocked through smart federal policy implementation.
Last month, WGCI member CNX Resources secured $31.5 million in federal Climate Pollution Reduction Grant (CPRG) funding through the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania for a coal mine methane (CMM) project at Core Natural Resources’ Enlow Fork Mine in Greene and Washington Counties. The project is expected to support hundreds of jobs and drive millions in investment. It would be Pennsylvania’s only remediated mine gas (RMG) capture and beneficial use initiative from current or prior mining activities—representing only the fourth active project of its kind in the United States.
The investment highlights how federal policy can help stimulate new domestic energy production, job creation, and economic development. It also underscores the importance of ensuring that final Treasury guidance for the 45Z Clean Fuel Production Credit provides a workable pathway for new coal mine methane and RMG projects.
“As Treasury finalizes guidance for the 45Z clean fuel credit, this project shows exactly what’s at stake,” said WGCI Executive Director Mike Moore. “Capturing and utilizing mine methane is a commonsense opportunity to create good-paying jobs, strengthen domestic energy production, and unlock investment in communities across Appalachia. With the right policy framework, 45Z can help scale projects like this in the legacy energy communities that need it most.”
WGCI recently submitted comments urging the Treasury to properly account for coal mine methane in its final 45Z guidance.
WGCI continues to advocate for federal policy to support the expansion of waste gas capture projects like Enlow Fork, helping drive new energy infrastructure investment and create jobs in mining regions across the country.
