Waste Gas Capture Initiative Applauds Miller Legislation to Expand Support for Mine Methane Capture, Unleash American Energy Production

Today, Waste Gas Capture Initiative (WGCI) Executive Director, Mike Moore, applauded Rep. Carol Miller (R-WV-01) for her introduction of the Methane Reduction and Economic Growth Act, legislation that will allow for the capture and repurposing of mine methane, enabling the U.S. to leverage this largely untapped domestic energy resource and unleash America’s energy production. Moore released the following statement:

“Capturing and utilizing mine methane—a largely untapped domestic energy resource—will help us to truly unleash America’s energy dominance,” said Mike Moore, Executive Director of the Waste Gas Capture Initiative (WGCI). “Thanks to Congresswoman Miller and her colleagues’ introduction of this legislation today, Congress and President Trump can help our country leverage mine methane capture to create good-paying jobs in rural communities, lower energy costs through increased production, support a healthy and thriving coal industry in the United States, and allow America to reclaim our energy security.”

This bill seeks to amend Section 45Q of the Internal Revenue Code to establish a mine methane incentive credit, recognizing the economic and energy impacts of capturing mine methane. With fewer than 2% of coal mines currently capturing waste methane, there is an opportunity to expand energy production, creating many American jobs and generating economic growth through the additional revenue generated. This legislation provides crucial support for the energy industry to scale mine methane capture practices, fostering innovation and helping advance President Trump’s “Unleash American Energy” agenda.
