Waste Gas Capture Initiative Welcomes New Guidance on Hydrogen Production Using Mine Methane

Following today’s release of proposed guidance from the U.S. Department of the Treasury and Internal Revenue Service (IRS) on the Clean Hydrogen Production Tax Credit—which details future hydrogen production pathways that include hydrogen produced using “fugitive methane, such as coal mine or coal bed methane”—Waste Gas Capture Initiative (WGCI) Executive Director, Mike Moore, issued the following statement:

“Today’s proposed guidance recognizes the untapped potential of mine methane capture and utilization. Mine methane capture is a commonsense energy solution that creates good-paying jobs, strengthens American energy security, and is beneficial for our environment. The WGCI is optimistic about the inclusion of mine methane capture as a part of our nation’s low carbon energy future and looks forward to working with the Administration and Congress to provide additional clarity and appropriate guidance that allows low carbon intensity feedstocks to help catalyze the nascent hydrogen economy in the United States,” said WGCI Executive Director Mike Moore.
